It's that time of the year again. Everyone is busy with decorations, gifting, home gatherings, and a thousand other items to get us through. It's time for us to think about this from a deployed soldier's perspective. Did you know that a soldier's positive morale can be greatly influenced by a connection to even strangers from home? Put yourself in the shoes (boots) of a deployed service member during the holidays. Now take it a step further and think that they may not have core family/friends who support them. How much would you miss a connection to home? Some of my best memories during my time in the service were getting a letter or a care package from someone and even better during the holidays. We all long for the holiday times even if we don't care to admit it. Especially if you are somewhere in the world that has no interaction with people that you are close to you. Everyone wants the joy that the holidays can bring and you, with little effort, can bring that to a soldier that's deployed or even stationed away from home.
First, ask around! If you don't know of any active service members, ask your friends and family if they know of anyone who is currently serving in the military. Second, get the address to send them a letter, care package or even email. Third, ship it! Even the smallest of items can bring great joy and positive morale to a soldier. Especially during the holidays. Please see the list of some great items to send below. Don't worry if you can't afford to send them anything other than an email. They will still love it! Can't find a soldier to support? Send us an email and we'll find someone for you.
Once you have the name and address to send to, now what do you say? This is really easy. Can you include an up to date picture of yourself or something going on in the area recently? Tell them how much you appreciate their service. Tell them something about you or how you would like to meet them when they return. Remember it's about the connection! Put yourself in their boots and this will write itself.
Being stationed with a fellow soldier who was from New Jersey, he always enjoyed Tasty Cakes in a care package. You would have thought that you sent him a box of gold bars! Find out something that they love the most. Even the smallest of items like their favorite shave cream or toothpaste, you get the idea. Need more suggestions, ask the troop's friends and family. Or you can ask someone who has been deployed!
This can be just as effective as a regular snail mail letter. Or used in combination with a letter and a care package. It's about the connection. Even if you don't have much to say, the soldier might, in their response. That's sometimes all that they are looking for. A chance to talk to someone.
There are probably a thousand tips that we could list here. The key is to just think it through. They may not be able to share their actual location or things that they are doing during their deployment. Don't be offended. It may just be a matter of national security. Also, they might not be able to have certain items depending on their deployment. Stay away from things that light up or make noise unless you know for sure that it's not going to put them in danger. It's not a good idea to send money or perishable items as well. Avoid objects that shine!
Send all three if you can. Listen, whatever you can afford to do is fine. If you can do more, do it. If you can't, just one thing will most likely increase their morale during the holidays or any time of the year! If you can send to multiple deployed troops, you might just be building a team of BFFs!!!
